Picking a Dental Floss

It's amazing how much variety you can find in dental floss. With conventional floss, you just tear off a piece at least 18 inches and wind it around your index fingers. If you find traditional thread-like floss is uncomfortable for your gums, try dental ribbon, its smoother counterpart. Dental flossers are often regarded as being easier to manage than conventional floss. There's no need to wrap any excess thread around your fingers, which some find uncomfortable.

If you have a fixed bridge in your mouth, nifty little floss threaders allow you to thread the floss between your teeth, under the bridge work. If you have questions about dental floss, just call Long Island Dental Excellence at (516) 766-0122 and we’ll be happy to make a recommendation.

Mouthguards

At Long Island Dental Excellence we recommend that a mouthguard be part of every athlete's gear, no matter the sport. Parents should make sure their children are protected. Even adults and weekend athletes need to protect their smiles and preserve their health. Wear a mouthguard at all times when playing sports. It’s always best to wear a mouthguard custom-fitted by your dentist, especially if you wear bridges or braces. Don’t wear removable appliances like retainers when playing sports.

If you have any questions about dental health for athletes, please call our office at (516) 766-0122 and we’ll be happy to help you find the answers.

Dry Mouth: More Than Just a Nuisance

It should be easy to seal an envelope, but those who suffer from a condition called xerostomia, or dry mouth, usually have to reach for some tape instead. Dry mouth can not only hinder your enjoyment of food, but affect the health of your teeth. Heavy plaque and food accumulations tend to occur with this condition, which can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.

Saliva is the body's self-cleansing mechanism. It helps remove food, debris, and plaque from the tooth surfaces, protecting you from oral diseases. It cleans your teeth and neutralizes acids, which prevents tooth decay. People who have dry mouth are very susceptible to cavities, especially on the roots of their teeth, so please call us today at (516) 766-0122 to schedule a consultation with Dr. Michael Rechter.
